Nankya Esther Kisakye
Nankya Esther Kisakye is 22 years old and studies veterinary medicine at Makerere University in Uganda.
What made you choose a career in the animal health sector?
I was inspired by our neighbor, who is the District Veterinary Officer back home in Mubende District. I admired him, it seemed so supernatural to me to do a C-section on cows. I wanted to save animals lives, like he does.
Did you experience any barriers in becoming successful in this field because you are a woman?
Not really, I just knew what I wanted hence I focused.
Who are your role models in the sector?
Dr.Kaaya Haruna, the owner of Chick masters Uganda limited and Dr. Ssematimba Mukama James, the District Verterinary Officer(DVO) Mubende District, who inspired me to become a veterinarian.
Based on your own experience, what would you advise woman who want to pursue a career in animal health and welfare?
All I say is they should engage people already in the field, know what exactly they want to do and then focus. Am sure the sky will be the limit.
How to you see the future of woman in the animal health sector?
The future is good. Women are continually believing in themselves that they can actually do this. Hence I believe later women will be allover in the Animal health sector.
